Monoamniotic Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day (14 October)

Unfortunately, not all monoamniotic twins survive.  We would like to ask you to take a moment to remember, and if you desire, say a prayer, for any momo twins that do not survive.

October 15 is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, a day of remembrance for pregnancy loss and infant death. The day is observed with remembrance ceremonies and candle-lighting vigils, concluding with the International Wave of Light, a worldwide lighting of candles at 7:00 p.m.  Momo twins do not have an official day of remembrance.  However, since momo twins alwasy arrive early we decided to dedicate October 14 for Monoamniotic Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day.

Monoamniotic Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day (14 October)
Feel free to spread the word about monoamniotic twins, on our "official" loss day or any other day, through the message below.

Monoamniotic twins are identical twins that share same amniotic sac within their mother’s uterus. This is caused by one egg splitting late, around 8 days after fertilization. These twins make up only 1% of all twin pregnancies. From the beginning these twins have a rough journey, along with their parents and siblings. There are high risks like cord entanglement, cord compression, and twin to twin
transfusion syndrome. Monoamniotic twins are all born via c-section between 32 and 34 weeks. The survival rate among these twins has gone up over the years from roughly 50% to 70-90% with aggressive fetal monitoring. Treatment involves scans at least every two weeks and inpatient hospitalization after 24 weeks until delivery.

On October 14th we recognize all the momos and their families that didn't make it through this difficult pregnancy, all those that got their angels wings before birth, during birth or during their long NICU stays after birth, or after their homecoming. Today we remember them by lighting a candle in their honor. Many thoughts and prayers for all the momo twins that did not make it, a candle is burning for you.
